Izuki-Ningyo is a kind of Ningyo-Joruri (a traditional Japanese musical puppetry) which has been played in Miho district in Iida City, Japan. It is said to have started in the late Edo period, when Ogasawara family, who ruled this neighborhood, gave instruments for puppetry to their residents in helping them to culturally enrich their lives. Though the succession of Izuki-Ningyo once broke off, some residents then hoped to revive their cultural resource of old ages, which led to the foundation of Izuki Puppet Club. Now technically supported by Imada-Ningyo-Za, another traditional puppetry troupe which is also playing nearby in Tatsue district in Iida City, Izuki Puppet Club’s 6 young members are working on succeeding their traditional cultural asset.
We are performing Ningyo-Joruri, which is a traditional Japanese musical puppetry. Ningyo-Joruri is characterized by two major features: One is Sango-Ittai, a combination of three actions – puppet operation (Ningyo-Zukai), musical instrument (Shamisen) and storytelling (Tayu). The other is Sannin-Zukai, the way three puppeteers collaborate in handling one puppet. Our program in the festival is Kotobukishiki-Sanbaso and Junrei-Utano-Dan from Keisei-Awa-No-Naruto. The former is a dance praying for the world peace and rich harvest. The latter is a drama describing the trouble within a dominant clan of a local society, and we are especially focusing one impressive scene in which a mother and a daughter show their affection and kindness to each other in a great difficulty.
